Bulldogs Blank Gardner-Webb for Big South Conference Win
10.16.2024 | Women's Soccer
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Soccer blanked Gardner-Webb 2-0 Wednesday night (Oct. 16) for the team's first Big South Conference win of the season.
Â
Asheville struck first in the eighth minute, when Mercedes McNabb scored her fifth of the season. Â McNabb cut to the middle from the near wing and after corralling her own blocked shot, beat the keeper to the right side. Asheville held Gardner-Webb to four shots in the first half while taking the 1-0 lead to the half.
Â
After several big saves from Gracie Murray in the second half, Asheville could sense the time melting away in the final few minutes. A ball was played out from the defensive end to Manuela Schreier, who sped her way through the midfield before feeding a ball out wide to Luca Holzl Tronchoni. Tronchoni fired a shot on net, deflected to Schreier by Gardner-Webb's keeper. Schreier couldn't put it in the net herself, but was able to tee it up for captain Ava Bjorkman-Tracy who stashed home the rebound for her fourth of the season and fourth of her career. The assist on the play was the first of Schreier's career.
Â
Both teams registered 14 shots in the contest, while Asheville held the 9-5 edge in shots on goal. Tronchoni, Addie Cooper and Daysha Chaney each had two shots in the match for Asheville, while Jasmine Barry, Akari Kishida, McNabb, Julia Husch, Ashley Macfarlane and Nao Kawasaki each had one shot in the match. Murray made five saves in the match in her first shutout of the season and fifth of her career, while also eclipsing 100 saves for her Bulldog career.
Â
The Bulldogs return to the pitch on Saturday (Oct. 19) to face USC Upstate in Big South Conference action. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. from Spartanburg, S.C., with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com. UNC Asheville's senior class will be honored prior to kickoff.
