ASHEVILLE'S LAST TIME OUT
In one of the more intense rivalries in the Big South Conference, the UNC Asheville Bulldogs defeated Winthrop University 82-77 on Thursday evening (Jan. 18). Asheville's victory in Rock Hill is the Bulldogs' second victory in the coliseum since 2011. The Bulldogs defeated Winthrop in Rock Hill on Jan. 29, 2021, when fan attendance was not allowed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Asheville's victory on Thursday was the first victory for the Bulldogs with a crowd in attendance since Dec. 31, 2011.
Winthrop opened Thursday's contest on an 8-2 run, but the Bulldogs would follow with an 11-3 run to tie the game at 12. The Eagles would go on to retake the lead and hold it for the remainder of the half, going on an 8-0 run to extend their lead out to 10 with 4:34 remaining. Trent Stephney would end Winthrop's run with a three-pointer, but the Eagles went into the break leading by seven (43-36).
Asheville made quick work out of the break, bringing Winthrop's lead down to two. Asheville tied the game at 49 following a jumper from Fletcher Abee. Winthrop regained its lead before Abee sank a triple to help the Bulldogs earn their first lead of the half (52-51).
Over the next three minutes, there would be two ties and three lead changes before both teams went scoreless for over two minutes. With 7:59 remaining, Stephney connected for back-to-back triples to help cut Winthrop's lead down to one (66-65). The Eagles retook the lead before Caleb Burgess' driving layup evened the score at 70. Following a missed free throw from Burgess, Drew Pember secured the rebound and found Banks on the perimeter, where he connected for the lead-securing basket.
