Bulldogs Notch First Big South Conference Win of the Season at Longwood on Saturday

FARMVILLE, Va. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball notched its first Big South Conference win of the season at Longwood on Saturday (Jan. 13) by a score of 69-61.

Asheville held Longwood to seven points in the opening quarter, taking a 15-7 lead after 10 minutes. Asheville jumped out to a 7-3 lead through three minutes of play, before outscoring the Lancers 8-4 over the remainder of the first quarter.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 12 with scores on their first two possessions of the second, later extending the lead to 14 with an 8-2 run to start the period. Longwood would trim the lead back to 10, but Asheville would respond to take a 33-19 lead to the half.

The teams played a tightly contested third quarter, with Asheville winning the frame 20-18 to take a 16-point lead to the fourth. Longwood opened the second half on an 8-2 run through two and a half minutes, eventually getting back to within six in the frame. Asheville would counter with a run of its own, extending the lead back to 16 headed to the fourth.

Longwood would outscore Asheville 24-16 in the fourth quarter to get to within as few as six in the frame, but the Bulldogs held on for the road conference win.

Asheville shot a season-high 47.3 percent (26-55) from the floor, 26.7 percent (4-15) from long range and 61.9 percent (13-21) from the foul line in the win. McKinley Brooks-Sumpter led all scorers with a game and season-high 21 points, matching LaImani Simmons for a season-high in a single game for Asheville while also eclipsing 750 points for her college career. Mallory Bruce also notched a season-high 14 points in the game for Asheville, while Jamaya Blanks notched her second double-figure effort of the season with 10 points. Faith Adams and Jaila Lee each had eight points in the game, with Lee notching 250 points for her career. Simmons added four points in the game, while Nycerra Minnis and Abigail Wilson each had two points. Asheville outrebounded its opponent for the sixth time this season, winning the battle on the glass 47-34. Brooks-Sumpter tied her career-high with a season-high 14 boards for her third double-double of the year, while Bruce and Lee each had six rebounds with Lee hitting 150 rebounds for her college career. Adams pulled down a season-high five rebounds in the game, while Wilson had four, Blanks had two and Briauna Thompson had one. Brooks-Sumpter dished out a season-high five assists in the game tying a season-high for the team, while Adams registered a season-high four helpers in the game. Bruce, Blanks and Millie Brown each had one assist in the game for Asheville. Blanks led Asheville with two steals in the game, while Adams, Brown, Wilson and Thompson each had one. Brooks-Sumpter, Lee and Minnis each registered one block in the game for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs return to Kimmel Arena on Wednesday (Jan. 17) to face Winthrop in the annual We Back Pat game. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m., with video, live stats and radio available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
