Asheville drops home match to Buccaneers

09.30.2023 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team hosted Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon and fell to the Buccaneers in four sets (25-20, 19-25, 17-25, 22-25).

ON THE COURT

Baylor Herlehy started the scoring for Asheville in the opening set with back-to-back kills to help start a 4-0 run for the Bulldogs. Asheville held its lead for the remainder of the set, extending its lead by as many as seven points.

Neither team jumped out with the hot hand in the second set until the Buccaneers' 4-0 run earned Charleston Southern a 10-6 lead. The Bulldogs cut the Bucs lead down to two, but Charleston Southern scored seven points to jump ahead 17-8. Charleston Southern extended its lead out to double-digits before the Bulldogs went on a 9-2 run to cut Charleston Southern's lead down to three (22-19). However, this was as close as Asheville would get, as Charleston Southern scored the following three points to close the set out and tie the match 1-1.

In the third set, Herlehy again helped Asheville to the lead with a kill to open the set. Charleston Southern, however, would answer by scoring the following three points, and the Buccaneers would hold their lead for the remainder of the set to go ahead 2-1.

Herlehy once again helped the Bulldogs on the board after the Buccaneers opened the set with a service ace. Herlehy scored the equalizer, and Kylie Cackovic followed with a kill to help Asheville take a 2-1 lead. The Bulldogs held its lead over the next four points until the Bucs tied the set 6-6, kicking off a 5-1 run (10-7). Asheville would tie the set at 14, but Charleston Southern would score the next three points to retake its lead and never look back as they picked up the victory.

IN THE BOX

Ona Elkins was one of three Bulldogs with a double-double, as she recorded season-highs in assists (26) and digs (21). Matilde Teixeira recorded 13 kills and 13 digs, and Michelle Thao finished the day with 17 digs and 10 kills. Katie Nichols posted 18 digs and Herlehy led the team with three blocks.
