Cross Country Starts Strong at Young Harris Invitational

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The UNC Asheville cross country teams began their 2023 season on a high note Friday evening in Georgia. The men's squad won the team title, while the women's team finished fourth. Furthermore, Adam Hessler won the men's race with a time of 18:30.3.
Hessler's first-place finish on Friday marked his third of his career and second in his last four races. In addition to Hessler's outing, three other Bulldogs finished among the top 10 runners on the day. Quinn Jacquez (3rd – 18:40.8), Daniel Hopkins (4th – 18:43.3), and Yates Hockaday (10th – 18:57.2) all joined Hessler in the top 10 finishers in the 6K race. Asheville had the most runners in the top 10 followed by three from Montreat and two from Western Carolina.
In the women's 4K race, 71 runners competed, and six Bulldogs placed among the upper half. Sophie Lundin started her sophomore campaign off on a high note with a ninth-place finish on a time of 16:09.0. Freshman Ella Moore was right behind Lundin. In her first collegiate race, Moore ran the 4K course in 16:11.0.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on September 15 when they compete in the Covered Bridge Open hosted by Appalachian State.
