Men's Soccer Drops Tight Contest at Georgia Southern on Sunday

STATESBORO, Ga. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer dropped a tight non-conference contest to Georgia Southern on Sunday (Aug. 27) by a score of 2-0.
The teams defended their respective ends well in the first half, with Asheville recording the lone shot in the half. Aysa Hamid got a good look at goal in the 32nd minute, letting go a shot low left that was saved by Georgia Southern keeper Nate Martinez. The teams went to the locker room scoreless.
Georgia Southern would strike first in the second half, with Jack Ireland scoring a penalty kick goal in the 53rd minute. Asheville responded with a chance in the 63rd minute when a ball was crossed in finding an unmarked Stuart Patnaud, who put a header on net through traffic that was grabbed by Martinez.
Asheville would get a late chance in the 83rd minute, before Luca Nelson fired a shot through a crowd that ended up over the cross bar. Georgia Southern would add an insurance marker in the 85th minute from an unassisted effort from Alex Smith.
Asheville edged Georgia Southern 7-6 in shots and 5-4 in corner kicks in the match. Sam Pitts-Eckersall, Seth Hammond, Edvin Grolimund, Aidan Whitlock, Nelson, Patnaud and Hamid each registered shots in the match for Asheville. Griffin Stidham also played all 90 minutes on the back line.
