Women's Golf in Action on the Amateur Circuits

06.15.2023 | Women's Golf

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Golf has been making some noise on the amateur circuits over the last few days.

In a field of 140 players, junior Madyson Gold advanced to the match play round of the 94th Women's Florida State Golf Association Amateur Championship, sitting in a tie for 43rd.  Gold shot a 79 (+8) in round one and a 78 (+7) in round two to sit at +15 headed to match play.

"The Copperhead course at Innisbrook is widely regarded as one of the hardest in the state of Florida, so it doesn't surprise me that Mady is playing well on it," said head coach Ross Cash. "Most really difficult golf courses turn competitors into hand wringers and worriers. Over the last year Mady has learned the most difficult golf offers her a competitive advantage because of how well she hits the ball and because of her confident decision-making ability. Whoever she plays in match play better hope it doesn't come down to the last few holes most commonly known as "The Snake Pit". If it does, Mady will be tough to beat."

Junior Phoebe Carles finished eighth in the Women's South Carolina Golf Association Amateur Championship, turning in a 231 (+15) with rounds of 78 (+6), 76 (+4) and 77 (+5).

"Phoebe has spent a lot of the summer working on her game," said Cash. "The South Carolina Womens Am was a great opportunity to go compete on the Ocean Creek course at Fripp Island where our conference tournament will be held for the next several years. It's always windy on the island to make scoring difficult and this week was no exception. Phoebe played solid golf in a strong field and will tidy up a few things and be ready for her senior year for sure."

Junior Amber Capote also placed fourth in the North Carolina Women's Golf Association Amateur Championship, turning in a 79 (+7) and a 78 (+6) in the tournament to finish +13.

"Amber has also been really working on her game as well," said Cash. "The North Carolina Womens Amateur is played at Verdict Ridge this year and definitely is a tough test. Amber is currently in fourth place and seems confident to make a run in the last round tomorrow. Amber is a great putter and if she gets the ball rolling early, she might really do some damage tomorrow. I'm excited that my team keeps putting their "face in the fan" and continue to develop the competitive spirit that will drive us as a team to great things next year."

Freshman Annabelle Mozingo also participated in the 94th Women's Florida State Golf Association Amateur Championship.
