Track and Field prepares for Big South Outdoor Championships

05.09.2023 | Track and Field

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville track and field teams will travel to Rock Hill, S.C. this week to compete in the Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 10-12. The Championships will take place at the Irwin Belk Complex on the campus of Winthrop University.

Last Time Out - On April 21-22, Asheville competed at the Georgia Tech Invitational in a two-day competition. The Bulldogs had a quality outing leading up to the conference championships, with multiple new personal records set and Solomon McDonald and Claudia Prieto breaking the shot put and triple jump school records.

Championship Rewind - In the 2022 Big South Outdoor Championships, the Bulldogs placed sixth (men) and seventh (women) respectively, coming off of a 2021 season where the Bulldog men had their best finish in the Big South since 2000 and the women since 2013. In this season's Big South Indoor Championships, Asheville had four conference champions, broke three program records and both the men's and women's squads finished among the top five in the team standings. The four conference championships by the Bulldogs are their most ever at the Conference's Indoor Meet.

Student-Athletes to Watch - A handful of Bulldog's are rounding into form as they approach the conference outdoor meet, as well as two Asheville track and field athletes who are having historic seasons for Asheville.

In his final season at Asheville, McDonald has put up some memorable performances, taking first place in the shot put at eight of eleven meets this school year and winning an indoor conference title in the shot put. McDonald, who is the most decorated thrower in program history, will look to continue his impressive season even after this conference meet, likely competing in the NCAA East prelims after his record breaking throw of 18.46-meters at Georgia Tech put him amongst the top-20 throwers on the east coast.

Prieto also broke the school record in the women's triple jump (12.60-meters) at Georgia Tech and looks to put more points on the board for Asheville in Rock Hill after claiming 18 points at the indoor championships. In her final season as a Bulldog, Prieto made a top-three finish in at least one event in every single meet dating back to March 19th, 2022 and ranks 11th in the NCAA Southeast region in the triple jump. Prieto is also a candidate to possibly compete in the NCAA East prelims.

Other notable athletes include Brianna Moore (Javelin), Zac Weas (110-meter Hurdles), Adam Hessler (5000 & 10,000-meters), Raina Jackson (Shot Put), John Ciprich (Steeplechase), Alex Haines (800 & 1500-meters), Brock Newsome (800-meters), and the men's 4x400 relay team of Anthony Mason, Jalen Anderson, Isaac Teasley, and Bryson Riddick.
