ROCK HILL, S.C. - THe UNC Asheville track and field teams took day two of the Big South Outdoor Championships by storm on Thursday (May 11). Both men's and women's teams made significant jumps in their team point totals with the men leaving the day in third place with 38 points, while the women gained ground, finishing with 37 points and holding fourth place.

The Bulldogs had a myriad of podium finishes and personal records set on Thursday, starting with Mallory Haney in the early afternoon, who finished second in the heptathlon. Haney finished the day with 4548 points, a school record for this event, after competing in the long jump (5.43-meters), javelin (22.27-meters), and 800-meter dash (2:32.22). In the long jump, she set a new personal record.

The next podium finisher was the always consistent Claudia Prieto, who took second in the triple jump with a leap of 12.44-meters. Prieto collected her second medal of the week and has given the Bulldogs 18 points throughout the two days of competition. She also took home two podium finishes at the Big South Indoor Championships.

Solomon McDonald also finished second place for the Bulldogs with a shot put throw of 17.77-meters. McDonald collected his second Big South All-Conference honor of the year, after collecting a first place finish in the shot put at the indoor conference meet. McDonald will likely continue his season later at the NCAA East Prelims, holding a top-20 throw in the region for the shot put.

In the final event of the day, the duo of Jackson Core and John Ciprich took second and third in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Both runners set the pace for the race, leading the pack until the final lap, with Core finishing second place with the third best time in school history (9:11.99). Ciprich was close behind to finish third, besting his previous personal record by over eight seconds (9:14.02).

The Bulldogs also had a significant amount of qualifying times, moving them to the finals on Friday. Zac Weas (110-meter Hurdles), Nick Roberts (110-Meter Hurdles), Bryson Riddick (400-meters), Anthony Mason (400-meters), Jalen Anderson (100-meters), Ava Nkadi (800-meters), Alex Haines (800-meters), Brock Newsome (800-meters), and Walker Lezotte (800-meters) all qualified in their events.
