Asheville walks away with 14 All-Conference Titles after Outdoor Championships
05.12.2023 | Track and Field
ROCK HILL, S.C. - The UNC Asheville track and field teams concluded the Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday (May 12). Overall, the Bulldogs had an extremely successful conference meet, taking home 14 All-Conference titles, the most ever at Big South Championship meet. The three-day meet also contained many outstanding performances with six school records being broken and a multitude of new personal records for the student-athletes to carry into the next season. In heartbreaking fashion, both the men's and women's team only needed one point to advance in the standings, with the men taking fourth place with 118 points, and the women taking sixth place with 56 points.
Additionally, Dylan Major and Claudia Prieto were named to the Big South All-Academic team, with Prieto winning the Big South Scholar Athlete of the Year for the fourth consecutive track and field season. Major was also recently awarded the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship awarded to undergraduates studying the natural sciences, engineering and mathematics. Major is one of only 308 students across the country majoring in the natural sciences to receive the Goldwater Scholarship this year. Prieto, along with winning the long jump with school record breaking leap and taking second in the triple jump, received her fifth Scholar Athlete of the Year award, easily making her one of the most decorated Bulldog athletes of all-time.
"As a staff, we were very proud of our men's and women's team performances," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "Especially with the number of podium finishes this week."
The final day got started with Brianna Moore taking second in the javelin with a throw of 43.25-meter, just shy of her personal best attempt. This was quickly followed by Solomon McDonald taking second in the discus, with a throw of 50.44-meters. Like many Bulldog athletes on the final day of competing, these two were narrowly edged out by their Big South opponents.
Kenny Wilkes later competed in the men's high jump, jumping school record 2.01-meters. Facing stiff competition, including an opponent that tied the Big South record and became the national leader in this event, Wilkes hung tough, finishing in fifth place.
Bryson Riddick (400-meter - 47.14), Zac Weas (110-meter hurdles - 14.21), and Jalen Anderson (200-meters - 20.91) all finished in third place in their individual events, each running a top-five all-time times, with Riddick breaking his own school record. These three all received medals in relays as well, with Anderson claiming three All-Conference titles by the end of the day.
The 4x100 relay team of Weas, Anderson, Anthony Mason, and Isaac Teasley finished third with a time of 40.87, the second fastest time in program history. Exchanging Weas for Riddick in the 4x400 relay, the team came out conference champions, tying their previous school record of 3:11.52 in the final event of the championships.
Most of the Bulldogs will be back in action next winter, when they begin the indoor season, but some may elect to compete in the Last Chance Meet being held at High Point this upcoming Sunday (May 14) in an attempt to improve their scores in an attempt to earn a spot in the NCAA East Prelims.
