05.10.2023 | Track and Field
ROCK HILL, S.C. - The UNC Asheville Track and Field team got off to a great start in the Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Wednesday (May 10). The Bulldogs collected one conference championship, multiple new personal records and earned six qualifying times to advance them to the Friday finals. Overall, the Bulldog women left the day in fourth place in the point totals with 14, while the men are sixth with 11 points.
Claudia Prieto once again led the charge for the Bulldogs, competing in the long jump. In her first attempt, Prieto tied her own school record (6.09 meters) and eventually broke the record on her last jump, leaping an astounding 6.12 meters to claim the conference title. This jump puts her tied for 46th in the NCAA East region, making her a candidate to qualify for the NCAA East prelims in this event. Prieto also claims her second conference title of the year after she took first place in the indoor triple jump in February.
Later in the evening, the men's 10,000 meter runners finished strong for the Bulldogs, with both Adam Hessler and Daniel Hopkins breaking the previous school record. Hessler, one of Asheville's most decorated distance runners, took third place in the finals, followed closely by Hopkins who placed fourth. Hessler reached the under 30 minute mark with a time of 29:59.29, shattering the school record he had set previously. Hopkins put five points on the board for Asheville with a 30:10.36 time.
Mallory Haney had a great start in her heptathlon effort, leading the field of competitors after competing in the 100-meter hurdles, shot put, high jump, and 200-meter dash. Haney (15.06) and her heptathlon partner Maya Dulaney (14.86), both set personal best times in the 100-meter hurdles.
The sprinting duo of Jalen Anderson and Anthony Mason both qualified for the finals in the 200-meter dash. Bryson Riddick set a new personal record of 21.65 in the 200-meters. Alex Haines and Brock Newsome also qualified in the 1500-meter run for the Friday finals.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Thursday (May 11), with decathlon events beginning at noon. Live Results can be found HERE and all the action will be streamed on ESPN+ HERE.
