ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville track and field team will close their outdoor season in Atlanta at the Georgia Tech invitational this weekend (Apr. 21-22). The two-day meet will begin on Friday at 12:30 p.m., and conclude on Saturday with events beginning at noon.
Last Time Out - The Bulldogs enter their final outdoor regular season meet coming off a successful trip to Western Carolina last weekend, where they participated in the Catamount Classic. Both men's and women's team tallied a number of personal records and season-bests, while breaking four school records in the men's shot put, women's triple jump, men's 400-meter dash, and men's 4x400 relay.
Record Breaking Bulldogs - Three student-athletes had outstanding, record-breaking performances at the Catamount Classic, first being Bryson Riddick, who broke his own school record in the 400-meter dash and anchored the 4x400 relay team alongside Anthony Mason, Jalen Anderson, Isaac Teasley. The senior posted a 47.66 time in the 400-meter to take second place in the event, besting his own record which he set at last year's Big South Outdoor Championships. The 4x400 relay team decisively won the event with a school record time of 3:11.52.
Solomon McDonald continued his stellar senior campaign in the throws taking second place in the discus (50.55 meters) and taking first place in the shot put, besting his outdoor record with a 18.29-meter throw. With his first throw over 60 feet in his collegiate career, McDonald ranks fourth in the NCAA Southeast region and 37th best across all Division I field athletes.
Claudia Prieto also broke her own school record in the women's triple jump at the Catamount Classic, jumping 12.44 meters, beating her previous distance by 22 centimeters. Prieto took first place in this event and first place in the women's long jump the day before.
Looking Ahead to the Big South Championships - Besides records being set by veteran Bulldogs, much of the team is rounding into form as the Big South Conference meet approaches in May. Brianna Moore has been steadily improving her throws on the javelin, taking second place last weekend, and placing in the top-three in her previous three meets. In those three meets she has improved her personal record twice, now holding the second best throw in program history at 42.53 meters.
Since the Big South Indoor Championship meet, Zac Weas has been on a hot streak in the hurdles. He improved his 110-meter hurdle time to 14.25 at the Catamount classic taking first place and took second place in the 400-meter hurdles (55.22) marking the fifth best time in program history.
About the Georgia Tech Invitational - The Bulldogs will return to the campus of Georgia Tech following a strong performance last year. Last season, Jalen Anderson set the 200-meter dash record, which he has since broken, and Raina Jackson set the women's shot put record of 13.77-meters. The field of competition will feature Big South competition from Campbell, Charleston Southern, and familiar matchups from Wofford, Western Carolina, Chattanooga, and Appalachian State.
