CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville track and field team concluded the Catamount Classic on Saturday (Apr. 15) in impressive fashion, breaking four outdoor school records with many Bulldogs earning personal records and season bests in the final day of competition. Asheville finished third in the men's group scoring with 103 points, and the women finished fourth with 65 total points.
With significantly better weather conditions on the final day, the Bulldogs put together one of their best individual and group performances of the season. Bryson Riddick led the way, breaking two Asheville school records in the same afternoon. Competing first in the 400-meter dash, Riddick took second place beating his personal best and school record by two hundredths of a second with a time of 47.66. The senior competed later in the afternoon in the 4x400 relay with teammates Jalen Anderson, Anthony Mason and Isaac Teasley, who together broke the school record and won the event in convincing fashion with a time of 3:11.52.
Solomon McDonald also had outstanding performances in every event he competed in this weekend, winning the men's shot put, taking second in the discus (50.55 meters) and fourth in the hammer throw. Competing yesterday in the hammer throw, McDonald bested his personal record with each successive throw until landing upon his new personal best of 48.65 meters. His main accomplishment came in his signature event, men's shot put, where he set a new school record of 18.29 meters. This throw is the longest ever by a Asheville field athlete in competition in either indoor or outdoor meets, and is the fourth best distance in the NCAA Southeast region and 37th best across all Division I field athletes.
Claudia Prieto also got in on the record-breaking fun, besting her own school record in the triple jump and taking first place in the event with a jump of 12.44 meters. With her sweep of both the triple jump and long jump yesterday, Prieto ranks 11th in long jump and 12th in the triple jump in the NCAA Southeast region.
In the hurdles, Zac Weas almost swept both events taking first in the 110-meter hurdles (14.25) setting a personal record. Weas also took second in the 400-meter hurdles (55.22) and also took third in the 4x100 meter relay alongside Anderson, Mason and Teasley. Madison Hannah took the top prize in the women's discus, throwing a 43.86 and adding her name to the record books with the third best throw in program history. Raina Jackson also took second place in the women's shot put with a 13.02 meter throw.
Asheville will be back in action next weekend (Apr. 21-22), heading to Atlanta to take on the Georgia Tech Invitational as their final meet before the Big South Outdoor Championships in May.
