Bulldogs Stay Sharp at Montreat Invitational Finale

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. - The UNC Asheville track team wrapped up the Montreat Invitational on Saturday (Mar. 25), adding three more first place finishes, six podium finishes and a slew of personal bests.
The Bulldogs were led by Zac Weas, who has improved exponentially over the course of the season. Weas took first place in both events he participated in, winning the 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles. With a 14.30 second time in the 110-meters hurdles, Weas improved his personal best to the second best time in outdoor program history. Weas ran the 400-meter hurdles for the first time in a collegiate meet, taking first with a 55.89 time, nearly setting another top-five time.
Earlier in the day, Brianna Moore took first place in the javelin, smashing her personal best with a throw of 41.88-meters. This throw also added her name to the record book, ranking third all-time in outdoor competition.Â
Maya Dulaney earned her first podium finish of the outdoor season, running a 15.55 in the 100-meter hurdles and taking second place. Ava Nkadi followed running a 2:18.81 in the women's 800-meter to claim third place in the event.
Veteran Bulldogs Brock Newsome and Alex Haines finished with nearly identical times in the men's 800-meters with Newsome taking second with 1:54.76 and Haines finishing third with 1:54.78.
Other standout performances include Chaniya Owens, who despite placing 15th in the 100-meter dash (13.12) and 12th in the 200-meter dash (27.31), improved her personal best times in both. Bryson Riddick took part in the 400-meter hurdles taking fourth place in the event with a time of 58.49. Tom Germann (1:56.07) and Amelie Simmes both improved their personal best times in the 800-meter run, with Simmes placing fourth with a time of 2:18.88.
The Bulldogs will return to the track next weekend (Mar. 31-April 1) at the VertKlasse Meeting hosted by Big South rival High Point. Asheville will face stiff competition from power conferences and multiple teams from the Big South.
