CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville track and field team opened their outdoor season on the right foot, finishing strong on Saturday (Mar. 19) at the 49er Classic. Overall, the Bulldogs posted six podium finishes, multiple personal best times and a new outdoor women's shot put program record.
The Bulldog winners from this two-day competition were the throwers, with Raina Jackson and Solomon McDonald sweeping the shot put on both men's and women's sides. Jackson had an impressive victory, beating out her own school record twice in the same event. Her throw to put her in second place of 13.96-meters broke the school record and her winning throw of 14.06-meters shattered the record again to put her in the top spot for the victory.
McDonald continued to excel in his final season as a Bulldog, winning the men's shot put with a throw of 17.62-meters and taking first prize in the event. McDonald has now taken first in this event at every meet he has competed at this school year except one, the Gamecock Opener, where he took second place.Â
Claudia Prieto kept her podium streak alive, taking second place in the triple jump with a distance of 12.06 meters, missing the top spot by only .01 meters. Madeline Wittschen found the podium as well, finishing second in her heat for the 5000-meter run and running a new personal best of 18:31.09.
Quinn Jacquez made an outstanding improvement on his personal best 5000-meter time, shaving off over 33 seconds to place first in his heat with a time of 15:17.39.
The 4x800 relay team of Brock Newsome, Nathaniel Edwards, Walker Lezotte and Preston Core took home a third place finish, narrowly missing a top-five finish in the Asheville record books.
Other notable finishes include the men's 4x100 relay team of Anthony Mason, Jalen Anderson, Isaac Teasley and Bryson Riddick finishing fifth and posting the fourth best time in program history (41.55). Anderson also took fourth in the men's 200-meter dash (21.52). Zac Weas continued to excel in the hurdles, improving his personal best in the 110-meter hurdles to 14.39 and placing him second in the Asheville record books. Alex Haines also improved his personal best time in the 1500-meter run to 3:55.10.Â
The Bulldogs will return to the track next weekend to take on two different meets, the Raleigh Relays hosted by NC State and the Montreat Invitational. A select few athletes will head to Raleigh to begin competition on Thursday (Mar. 23) and the rest of the track and field team will stay close to home to compete at Montreat on Friday (Mar. 24).
