Bulldogs Extend Win Streak to Three with Hard-Fought Victory over Winthrop Wednesday Night

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball team extended its win streak to three with a 65-59 win at Winthrop Wednesday night (Feb. 8).
This marks the first three-game win streak for the Bulldogs since the 2020-21 season, when the Bulldogs defeated Presbyterian on Feb. 16, 2021 before later beating Winthrop twice in two days inside Kimmel Arena (Feb. 19-20) by scores of 61-37 and 57-46.
The teams traded buckets early before the Bulldogs extended their lead to six and then nine in the final two minutes of the first quarter. Winthrop would net the final bucket of the period as Asheville took a 19-12 lead to the second.
Winthrop was able to find its stride offensively in the second quarter while holding the Bulldogs to just nine points in the frame, as the Eagles took a 31-28 lead to the half.
The Bulldogs would respond in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 21-13 in the period. After free throws from McKinley Brooks-Sumpter tied the game at 31, the teams went back and forth before eventually coming to a 38-38 deadlock with four and a half minutes to play in the frame. The Bulldogs went on a run to burst ahead by seven with points on their next three possessions with a with layup from Jamia Blake, free throws from Jamaya Blanks and a three-pointer from Millie Brown. Winthrop would cut into the lead before the buzzer as the teams headed to the fourth with Asheville up 49-44.
Winthrop cut the lead to just two to start the fourth, before a two-possession swing from Asheville had the Bulldogs back up by seven with a jumper from Abigail Wilson and a triple from Jordaynia Ivie. The lead fluctuated anywhere from as many as nine to as few as two and then tied at 56 through the next few minutes, before Asheville would close the game out on a 9-3 run to ice the victory.
Asheville scored 22 points in the paint in the game, while out-scoring Winthrop 18-2 off turnovers, 13-4 on second chances, 2-0 off fast breaks and 18-4 off the bench. Brooks-Sumpter led the Bulldogs with 16 points in the game, while Jordaynia Ivie also had 11. Nycerra Minnis and Mallory Bruce each had eight, while Faith Adams and Blake each had four and Wilson and Brown each had three. Each team pulled down 33 rebounds in the game, with Minnis leading the way with a new career-high of eight. Brooks-Sumpter pulled down seven boards in the game, while Blanks had four and Bruce and Wilson each had three. Ivie grabbed two rebounds in the game, while Adams and Blake each had one. Brooks-Sumpter, Dakota McCaughan and Blanks each dished out a team-high three assists in the game, while Minnis, Wilson and Adams each had one with Minnis tying a career-high. Ivie tied her career-high with a game-high five steals, while Brooks-Sumpter, Wilson and Blake each also had one.
The Bulldogs return to the floor in Kimmel Arena on Saturday (Feb. 11) to face Presbyterian in Big South Conference action. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. from Kimmel Arena.
