Women's Basketball Battles, but Drops Close Conference Contest to Presbyterian on Saturday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville women's basketball battled, but dropped a close Big South Conference contest to Presbyterian on Saturday (Feb. 11) by a score of 76-73. Â
The teams played to a 7-7 deadlock through the first four minutes and change, before Presbyterian went up by three at two different points late in the frame. A three-pointer with 58 seconds left by Jordaynia Ivie sent the game to the second quarter tied at 16.
Presbyterian would jump out to an eight-point lead in the second, before a run by the Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to one with 4:20 to play in the half. Presbyterian held their lead until the two-minute mark of the half when Ivie knocked down another triple to tie the game at 36. After two quick Presbyterian buckets, Mallory Bruce scored the last points of the half with a layup to send the Bulldogs to the half trailing just 40-38.
Presbyterian built its lead back up to seven early in the third quarter, before the Bulldogs quickly trimmed it back to two just over three minutes into the period. Presbyterian maintained a fluctuating lead throughout the entire quarter, building it back up to eight as the game headed to the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs battled through the early minutes of the fourth quarter as Presbyterian maintained a lead, but the Bulldogs would not go quietly. A three-pointer from Dakota McCaughan with four and a half minutes left cut the deficit to three, before Presbyterian countered with a three-pointer of their own. The Bulldogs would get within two after a three-pointer by Faith Adams with just over a minute to play, but Presbyterian was able to ice the game at the free throw line.
Asheville out-scored Presbyterian 17-7 off turnovers in the game, 12-8 on second chances and 30-11 off the bench in the game. Ivie led the scoring effort with 16 points, while McCaughan had 12 and Bruce had 10. McKinley Brooks-Sumpter contributed nine points in the game, while Adams, Abigail Wilson, Jamaya Blanks and Jamia Blake each had six and Nycerra Minnis also had two. The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Blue Hose 37-35 in the game, led by nine from Brooks-Sumpter and seven from Wilson. Bruce pulled down six boards in the game, while Minnis had five and McCaughan had three. Ivie and Blanks each registered two rebounds in the game, while Adams also had one. Blanks led the way with five assists in the game, while McCaughan had three and Brooks-Sumpter and Bruce each had two. Ivie, Jamia Blake and Millie Brown each also registered one assist in the game. Bruce led Asheville with two steals in the game, while Brooks-Sumpter, Ivie, Blake and Brown each had one. Blanks also matched career-highs in both made free throws and free throws attempted, going 4-6 in the game.
