BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The UNC Asheville track and field exhibited several strong performances in their final meet before the Big South Conference Championships, taking home three first place finishes and three other podium performances at the Bulldog Open, a one-day competition hosted by Samford University.

The Bulldogs were led by Solomon McDonald, Alex Haines, and Adam Hessler who took first prize in their events, with McDonald winning the men's shot put, Haines taking first in the one mile run, and Hessler winning the 3000 meter run.

After posting a personal best in the mile run at the Gamecock Opener in January (4:16.42), Haines has continued to produce, placing third in his next meet with a new personal best (4:14.52) and now finished first again in Birmingham with a time of 4:15.58.

McDonald, the all-time leader in Bulldog shot put, has dominated the 2023 indoor season. Of the four meets this season, McDonald has come in first place in three of them and second in his other attempt. If not for McDonald owning the Asheville shot put record already, his throw of 17.55 meters would have broken it today.

Adam Hessler rounded out the winning for Asheville, taking first place in the men's 3000 meter run. Hessler gets back in the win column after having a stellar cross country season and placing first in this event at the Gamecock Opener. With a time of 8:23.40, Hessler ran a new personal-best and lowered his second all-time record that he set last year.

Other notable performances came from a third place finish from Walker Lezotte, who set himself a new personal-best (1:56.27), and a third place finish from the men's 4x400 relay team of Anthony Mason, Bryson Riddick, Christopher Owens and Nick Roberts (3:21.63). Raina Jackson continued her podium streak, placing third in the women's shot put with a throw of 13.55 meters, narrowly missing her own school record.

The Bulldogs will be back in action at the Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships held in Blacksburg, V.A. in a two-day competition on the February 24 and 25.
