ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team hosted Winthrop Friday evening in the Justice Center and fell in three sets (25-22, 25-18, 25-20).
Sydney Bradley led Asheville with seven kills and was followed by Kylie Cackovic with six and Baylor Herlehy with five. Herlehy also led the team with three blocks and was followed by Avery Loeback and Albertine van der Goot with two apiece.
Ona Elkins recorded 13 assists, and van der Goot recorded seven. Matilde Teixeira led Asheville's defense with nine digs, Katie Nichols followed with eight, and Elkins with seven.
In the opening frame, back-to-back kills from Herlehy sparked a 3-0 run to help Asheville jump ahead 10-8. Asheville held its lead through the media break (15-12) before the Eagles came out of the break on a 4-0 run to jump ahead 16-15. Asheville responded with a 4-0 run of its own, sparked by a kill from Cackovic, but the Eagles responded with another 4-0 to move ahead 20-19. The Bulldogs retook a one-point lead before Winthrop closed the set out on a 5-1 run to win 25-22.
In the second set, Winthrop came out with heavy momentum, taking a 12-6 lead, and never slowed down, as they did not lead by less than four points for the remainder of the set. The Eagles came out similarly in the third set, earning a 15-5 advantage over the Bulldogs. Asheville did not back down, as the Bulldogs used a 6-1 run to cut Winthrops' lead down to six (21-15) and a 5-2 run to cut the Eagles' lead down to four (24-20), but a block assist from the Eagles would end Asheville's late set push and help Winthrop on to victory.
Asheville will return to the Justice Center tomorrow, Saturday, November 4, as they host Gardner-Webb at 4 p.m. Before tomorrow's match, Asheville will be honoring its four seniors.
