Bulldogs in the Pros: Former UNC Asheville Baseball Player and Assistant Coach Mike Shildt Named San Diego Padres Manager

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The San Diego Padres announced on Tuesday, Nov. 21, that Mike Shildt has been hired as the 23rd manager in franchise history. Shildt, 55, agreed to a two-year contract and has been a senior advisor for the Padres for the past two seasons.
Shildt succeeds Bob Melvin, who left the franchise to become the manager of the San Francisco Giants. Shildt was the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals from 2018-21 after spending most of his career coaching within the organization. He put together a .559 winning percentage (252-199), taking the Cardinals to three consecutive postseasons. He was named the National League Manager of the Year in 2019.
A member of the UNC Asheville team from 1987-90, Shildt was also an assistant coach for the Bulldog baseball program from 1992-93. In 2019, Shildt was inducted into the UNC Asheville Athletics Hall of Fame.Highlights || Baseball || UNC Asheville vs Presbyterian (Game 3)
