Bulldogs Cruise Past Queens (N.C.) for Non-Conference Win on Tuesday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball cruised past Queens (N.C.) for a 67-53 non-conference win on Tuesday (Nov. 21) at Kimmel Arena.

Asheville led Queens 14-6 after one quarter, using a 9-0 run over the final 2:51 to finish out the quarter. The run consisted of a bucket from Abigail Wilson, followed by three straight scoring possessions for McKinley Brooks-Sumpter capped off with an old-fashioned three-point play.

Asheville built its lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Royals 20-8 to lead by as many as 20 in the frame and take a 34-14 lead at the half.

The Royals responded to win the third quarter 20-17, but Asheville still held a big lead headed to the fourth. After a Royals run began the fourth quarter, Asheville settled down offensively and was able to knock down some clutch shots both from the field and the foul line to secure the victory.

Asheville shot a season-best 41.1 percent (23-56) from the floor, 17.6 percent (3-17) from beyond the arc and a season-best 70.8 percent (17-24) from the charity stripe. Asheville alos outscored Queens 18-16 off turnovers, 28-22 in the paint and 41-32 off the bench in the game. Brooks-Sumpter led the Bulldogs with a game-high 20 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, while Jaila Lee also had 10 points on the night. LaImani Simmons had nine points in the game, along with eight each from Millie Brown and Mallory Bruce. Nycerra Minnis and Wilson each contributed four points in the game, while Jamaya Blanks had three points and Trinity Fields recorded her first collegiate point. Asheville out-rebounded Queens 42-38 in the contest, led by Brooks-Sumpter's 11 and five boards from Blanks. Simmons, Bruce and Faith Adams each had four rebounds in the game, while Wilson pulled down three boards. Lee and Fields each had two with Fields marking a new career-high, while Brown, Minnis and Jada Brigman each had one. Dakota McCaughan dished out three assists to lead the Bulldogs, while Lee had two and Brooks-Sumpter, Blanks, Bruce, Adams and Brown each had one. Adams led the way with three steals in the game, while Lee had two and Brown also had one. Wilson and Minnis each recorded one block in the win.  

The Bulldogs (2-2) return to the floor at the Thanksgiving Classico in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where they take on Morgan State on Friday, Nov. 24. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m., with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
