Women's Golf Completes Day One of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational

MANOA, HAWAII - UNC Asheville Women's Golf completed play on day one of Hawaii's Rainbow Wahine Invitational on Monday (Oct. 23).
The Bulldogs sit in 10th out of 16th teams, just a total of eight shots outside the top five in the field after a 304 in the first round. Asheville was paced by Madyson Gold who sits in a tie for fourth individually after a 70 (-2). Beryl Giletti is the other Bulldog in the Top 20, sitting in a tie for 19th after a +1 73. Phoebe Carles turned in an 80 (+8), while Hailey Pendleton carded an 81 (+9). Amber Capote and Presley Pickron each posted an 82 (+10), while Ally Kerr shot an 87 (+15).
Gold's round began with a par on No. 5, before making birdie on No. 6 and pars on the next two holes. Gold made the turn to the back after a birdie on No. 9, opening the back with a par on No. 10 and a birdie on No. 11. After a double bogey on No. 12 and a birdie on No. 13, Gold made par on the next three holes before finishing the back with two straight bogeys. Gold made the turn back to the front and alternated par and birdie through the last four holes of her opening round.
Giletti's day began with a birdie on No. 6, before making par on No. 7, birdie on No. 8 and bogey on No. 9. After a bogey on No. 10, Giletti shot even par over the remainder of the back nine, before continuing her streak over No. 1 and No. 2. She went bogey, bogey and birdie on No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 to finish out her round.
"I thought for sure we were going to play great today and I guess I was half right," said head coach Ross Cash. "Obviously, Mady and Beryl played great golf today. We just need to put it all together. Phoebe has played great all year and Ally has hit the ball great for the last month and Hailey is totally ready to break through. Tomorrow we will get it done and move up."
The Bulldogs return to the course tomorrow (Tuesday, Oct. 24) for day two of the tournament. Play is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. local time (3:00 p.m. EST), with live results available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
