Volleyball drops straight set match to Radford

10.21.2023 | Women's Volleyball

ASHEVILLE, N.C – The UNC Asheville volleyball team hosted Radford University Saturday afternoon in the Justice Center and fell in three sets to the Highlanders (25-18, 25-18, 25-23).

ON THE COURT

The match got underway with back-to-back kills from Radford, but the Bulldogs quickly responded to close the gap with kills from Albertine van der Goot and Matilde Teixeira, opening Asheville's scoring to even the set 3-3. Radford responded by taking a six-point lead (12-6) and entered the media break leading 15-10. Out of the break, the Highlanders continued to extend their lead and went on to earn the opening set win 25-18.

The Bulldogs took an early lead in the second frame, following a kill from Baylor Herlehy, two from Kylie Cackovic, and one from van der Goot (5-3). Radford then caught fire, going on an 8-1 run to jump ahead 11-6. Asheville cut the Highlander's lead down to two following back-to-back kills from Herlehy and van der Goot before the Highlanders sent the game into the media break (15-12). Out of the break, Radford went on a 7-2 run to jump ahead 22-14, but the Bulldogs responded with a kill from Teixeira and took advantage of three Radford errors to bring the score back within five (23-18). This was as close as Asheville would get, as Radford finished the set with back-to-back kills to win once again 25-18.

In the third set, an early attacking error put Radford ahead 4-3, a lead they failed to hold onto for long as Asheville answered with a 10-1 run to go ahead 13-5. Asheville extended its lead out to nine, following three consecutive kills from Teixeira (19-10), but the Highlanders would respond with a 10-1 to tie the set at 20. Asheville extended its lead back out to three, following a Radford attack error, a kill from Sydney Bradley, and a service ace from M.K. Roberts, but the Highlanders responded by closing the set out on a 5-0 run to win 25-23.

Teixeira and van der Goot led Asheville with nine kills apiece. Ona Elkins recorded 13 assists and Kat Davis finished with 11 assists. Herlehy and Avery Loeback recorded three blocks each.
