Bulldogs fall to Buccaneers on the road

10.27.2023 | Women's Volleyball

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team traveled to face Charleston Southern Friday evening and fell to the Buccaneers in three sets (26-24, 25-17, 25-20).

Matilde Teixeira led Asheville with nine kills, followed by Baylor Herlehy and Sydney Bradley with six kills each. Kat Davis led Asheville with 12 assists, and Albertine van der Goot followed with nine. Katie Nichols led Asheville's defense with 10 digs.

Neither team jumped out with the upper hand in the opening frame before the Buccaneers used a 9-1 run to jump ahead 18-9. The Bulldogs, however, did not give up easy, as they answered by limiting Charleston Southern to just four points, while they went on to score 13 points to tie the set at 22. Herlehy and van der Goot sparked Asheville's comeback with three consecutive blocks, and Bradley recorded three kills in Asheville's run. Charleston Southern responded by scoring the following two points, making it set point before the Bulldogs capitalized on two Buccaneer attack errors to tie the set at 24. Charleston Southern followed similarly, earning the final two points of the set from Bulldog errors.

The Buccaneers carried its momentum over to the second set, as they jumped ahead 10-4. Charleston Southern would extend its lead out by eight before the Bulldogs would go on a 4-0 run to cut Charleston Southern's lead down to four (19-15). Bradley, Teixeira, and Avery Loeback sparked Asheville's run with three consecutive kills. This was as close as Asheville would get, as Charleston Southern closed the set out on a 6-2 run, taking a 2-0 lead.

In the final frame, the Buccaneers took a 7-3 lead and never looked back, as they went on to win the third set 25-20 and sweep the match.

Asheville will play its final road game of the season tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 28, as they travel to Presbyterian to take on the Blue Hose at 2 p.m.
