Volleyball drops road contest at Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team traveled to face Winthrop on the road Saturday afternoon and fell to the Eagles in three sets (25-19, 25-16, 25-21).
ON THE COURT
Matilde Teixeira opened Asheville's scoring with a kill, followed by Albertine van der Goot recording two kills and Michelle Thao recording a kill to help Asheville hold an early 6-3 lead. The Eagles, however, would respond with a 3-0 run to tie the score at six. Back-to-back kills from Teixeira would help Asheville extend its lead to three (10-7). Asheville entered the media timeout leading 15-12, but out of the break, the Eagles went on a 4-0 run to take the lead 16-15. Asheville would tie the score three times before Winthrop would string together three consecutive kills to spark a 7-1 run to close the set out and win 25-19.
In the second set, Asheville opened the frame with a 6-4 lead before Winthrop went on a 6-1 run to go ahead 10-7. Winthrop held its lead for the rest of the set and took a 2-0 lead.
Asheville took a 3-1 lead to open the third set, but the Eagles quickly responded with a 4-0 run to go ahead 5-3. The Bulldogs bounced back with a 3-0 run, sparked by a kill from Sydney Bradley, to take the lead 8-7. Winthrop responded with a 7-1 run, jumping ahead 14-9, before Asheville caught momentum with a 7-0 run (16-15). A kill from Baylor Herlehy sparked the run. Winthrop tied the set at 17, but a kill from Michelle Thao and a service ace from Katie Nichols helped Asheville retake a two-point lead. This would be the Bulldogs' final lead as Winthrop closed the set out on an 8-2 run.
IN THE BOX
Ona Elkins and van der Goot led the Bulldogs in the box with 15 and 10 assists, respectively. Thao led Asheville with eight kills, and Nichols recorded eight digs. Herlehy led Asheville with four block assists.

Asheville falls to 6-14 (0-7 Big South).
The Bulldogs hit the road for their final nonconference match of the season as they face Middle Tennessee State on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. ET.
