BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The UNC Asheville volleyball team traveled to face Gardner-Webb Friday evening, and fell to the Runnin' Bulldogs in three sets (25-23, 26-24, 25-18).Â
ON THE COURTÂ
Neither team jumped out with the dominant hand in the opening frame as there were five ties before the media timeout. Out of the break, GWU extended its lead out by two, before Asheville bounced back, tying the score at 16 following a block from Matilde Teixeira. This however, would be as close as Asheville would get to retaking the lead, as Gardner-Webb answered with a 5-0 run, and went on to take the win.Â
It was back and forth once again to open the second set, before a kill from Avery Loeback helped Asheville take the lead 9-8. Asheville went on to extend its lead out to six, before an 8-1 run from GWU evened the score at 20. The Runnin' Bulldogs went on to take the lead, but the Bulldogs continued to battle, sending the set past regulation end, before falling 26-24.Â
In the final set, GWU jumped in the lead and Asheville was never able to jump ahead. The Bulldogs kept the set close, tying the score five times, but Gardner-Webb used a 5-0 run to pull ahead 22-17, and never looked back, as they went on to win 25-18 and secure the match victory.Â
IN THE BOXÂ
Albertine van der Goot led Asheville with six kills, six blocks and 10 assists, and was joined by Ona Elkins who also had 10 assists. Katie Nichols recorded nine digs.Â
