Track and Field travels to VMI to take on the Winter Classic

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville track and field teams will continue their indoor season this weekend when they travel to the Corps Physical Training Facility in Lexington, V.A. to take on the VMI Winter Classic in a two-day competition. Events will be held on Friday from 12:55 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. and 9:55 a.m. to 4:10 p.m. on Saturday.

Last Time Out: Two weeks ago, the track and field team competed in the Gamecock Opener in Columbia, S.C. in a one-day competition. The Bulldogs finished the day with a trio of first place finishes and five more podium finishes. Two new top-five all-time finishes were added to the Asheville record books on the men's distance side.
Dominating Distance Running: Adam Hessler and Alex Haines have continued their impressive fall outdoor season into the indoor season, with a pair of first place finishes at the Gamecock Opener, with Hessler setting another top-five Asheville record in the 3000 meter (8:28.71) and Haines setting a top-five Asheville record and a personal best in the 1 mile run (4:16.42). Haines collected his second straight meet with a first place finish after winning the the 800 meter in John Weaver invitational to open up the indoor track season. Hessler continued his record breaking 2022-23 with his third addition to the record books carrying over from the cross country season where he broke the 8K and 10K records.
Co-Big South Women of the Year: Along with her educational achievements, Co-Big South Women of the Year Claudia Prieto has been having stellar on-the-field finishes in her senior season. At the John Weaver Invitational, Prieto broke her own triple jump record to win the event with a distance of 12.45 meters. She placed second in the triple jump at the Gamecock opener with a distance of 11.56 meters and a fourth place finish in the long jump.
Shot Put Stars: Throwers Solomon McDonald and Raina Jackson have shown off their shot put abilities this indoor season, with Jackson breaking a school record at John Weaver (14.59 m) and coming in second place at the Gamecock Opener. McDonald matched her on the men's side, tying his own record at John Weaver (18.28 m) and coming in second place at the Gamecock Opener.
Other Teams Competing: UNC Asheville will be joined by fellow Big South competitors from Winthrop and Radford, along with the hosting school VMI and fellow Division I schools Appalachian State and James Madison. The competition will also host numerous Division II and Division III schools.
