LEXINGTON, Va.
- The UNC Asheville track and field teams posted another strong showing at the VMI Winter Classic this weekend, among a crowded field of 36 teams. The Bulldogs captured three first place finishes with Claudia Prieto winning the women's triple jump and women's long jump, while Solomon McDonald claimed first place in the men's shot put. The Bulldogs nabbed four more podium finishes to cap a solid weekend.

The veteran Bulldog track and field student-athletes stepped up this weekend, with Prieto taking home first prize in the long jump (5.92m) and triple jump (12.15m), narrowly missing her own records in those events, which she set earlier this season. Prieto holds the Asheville records for long jump and triple jump, along with the second fastest time in the 55-meter and 60-meter dashes.

McDonald is also having an impressive season, as he has not placed lower than second place in a men's shot put throw this indoor season. McDonald's first place score of 17.76-meters, like Prieto, narrowly missed his own school record of 18.28 meters, which he tied in the opening meet of the season.

Another veteran Bulldog, Alex Haines, took a third place finish in the 1-mile run with a time of 4:14.52. After winning the 800-meter run in the opening meet, Haines set a personal-best and second best time in program history in the mile at the Gamecock Opener (4:16.42), and now beat his personal-best again with his performance at VMI.

Other notable finishes include Zac Weas taking second place in the 60 meter hurdles (8.13), which would be his third podium finish this season in this event. The Bulldog 4x400 men's relay runners grabbed second place with the team of Anthony Mason, Jalen Anderson, Isaac Teasley, and Bryson Riddick. Asheville also took a third place podium spot in the men's 4000 meter distance medley with the team of Riddick, Nathaniel Edwards, Walker Lezotte, and Yates Hockaday.

"There are some team-wide improvements that were apparent," said UNC Asheville Head Coach Joel Williams. "There are still numerous areas to work on. In two weeks, we hope to be closer to conference form."

The Bulldogs will compete in their final meet before the Big South Indoor Championships on February 11 in Birmingham, Alabama at the Bulldog Open hosted by Samford University.
