Men’s Basketball Tops Charleston Southern, 73-63, for Fifth Straight Win
01.18.2023 | Men's Basketball
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville men's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games on Wednesday as it upended Charleston Southern on the road by the score of 73-63. The victory improves Asheville's record to 14-6 overall and 6-1 in Big South play.
The five-game winning streak, which also included triumphs over High Point, Campbell, Longwood, and Gardner-Webb, is Asheville's longest in a season since 2017-18. Furthermore, the Bulldogs' 6-1 start to begin Big South play is their best since the 2015-16 campaign.
Like he has so many times this season, Drew Pember filled the stat sheet for Asheville finishing the night with 20 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Tajion Jones was not far behind Pember with 17 points of his own that featured a 5-for-8 effort from beyond the arc. Caleb Burgess also finished the night in double figures with a season-high 14 points on an efficient 6-for-10 shooting day from the field.
The first swing of momentum on Wednesday went to Charleston Southern as it scored eight of the first 10 points of the game. Asheville, however, battled back like it has in the other four games of this winning streak.
The Bulldogs were effective from 3-point range (5-for-11) in the opening 20 minutes to erase the early Charleston Southern lead. One of those threes came from Fletcher Abee with 27 seconds to go before halftime to put the Bulldogs up by 10, 35-25.
After Charleston Southern answered with a three of its own to make it 35-27 at the half, the Bulldogs kept the pressure on in the second. Asheville's lead dipped below double figures on a couple of occasions but Pember (14 points in second half), Jones (nine points), Burgess (eight points) and the rest of the Bulldogs did not let Charleston Southern come closer than that as they finished off the 73-63 win.
Asheville will return home on Saturday to host USC Upstate at Kimmel Arena. Saturday's game, which will be presented by TD Bank, is scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip-off on ESPN+.
