09.30.2022 | Women's Volleyball

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The UNC Asheville volleyball team fell to Big South opponent USC Upstate Friday night in straight sets (25-11, 26-24, 25-22) after battling in the final two sets of the match.

Stat Standouts - The Bulldogs were bolstered by their defense in this match with libero Giulia Rodrigues leading the way by putting up 20 digs to lead all players in the match. Nina Finderle also played well defensively, getting four blocks in the second set to extend the match for Asheville. Finderle also posted the most efficient scoring night for Bulldogs, leading the team with a .364 hitting percentage.

First Set - Asheville kept up with the Spartans out of the gate, trading off points early on in the first frame. After the Bulldogs tied the set 4-4, USC Upstate put their foot on the gas and Asheville could not keep up with the Spartans. USC Upstate went on to make two five-point runs later in the set to close out the Bulldogs, 25-11.

Second Set - After a lackluster first set, the Bulldogs bounced back offensively and defensively. After being kept quiet in the first set, Asheville's leading offensive player, Kat Cruser, put the Bulldogs up 8-6 as part of a four-point run. The Spartans battled back to go up 18-15, which was followed up by another four-point run by the Bulldogs to take the lead. Rodrigues' defensive skills were crucial in keeping the Bulldogs within striking distance in the final two sets, keeping alive multiple rallys for the Bulldogs. The two teams traded points into the final moments of the set until an attack error sealed the game for the Spartans, taking the set 26-24.

Third Set - The Bulldogs started off strong in the final set, making a four-point run off a series of errors by the Spartans. The Bulldogs made another four-point run off of a couple of kills from Cruser and an ace from Chloe Conroy, putting Asheville up 10-7. USC Upstate kept the match close despite the runs from Asheville in the first frame, and knotted the game up 16-16 before taking control of the rest of the match and putting the Bulldogs away, 25-22.

Next Up - UNC Asheville, now 3-10 and 0-3 in the Big South Conference, will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Gardner-Webb in a conference bout scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
