BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The UNC Asheville volleyball team fell to their Big South counterparts Gardner-Webb, 3-0, on Saturday (25-18, 25-23, 25-13), despite hanging tough in the second set.
Stat Standouts - Lexy Cole led the way for the Bulldogs in this match, posting a team-leading hitting percentage of .300 and acting as the main defensive threat with her three blocks. Lindsay Springer had a nice game as Asheville's leading setter, assisting with over 73 percent of the Bulldog kills in the match. Kat Cruser continued to lead Asheville in kills, adding six to her team leading total of 119.
First Set - The Bulldogs started off hot in the first frame of the contest, jumping out a 5-1 lead on the back of some excellent serves by Pelin Aksoy. Gardner-Webb crawled their way back into the match, tying the game at 10-10, before ripping off two four-point runs that put the Bulldogs at a 21-15 disadvantage. From there, Asheville could not mount a comeback and Gardner-Webb took the set, 25-18.
Second Set - Asheville played its best all-around game in the second set of the contest. The set remained close early on, with the score tied 7-7, before Cole stepped up and stuffed a few Gardner-Webb players at the net and threw down some kills to put the Bulldogs up three. Asheville was able to extend their lead to 16-12 before Gardner-Webb mounted their comeback, grabbing an ace and exploiting Asheville's defensive mistakes. The set went to a tie, 23-23, before Gardner-Webb finished off the Bulldogs with two straight kills from Delany McCullough.
Third Set - With a heartbreaking second set loss, the Bulldogs started out flat in the third set. Gardner-Webb quickly got out to a 13-3 start to which the Bulldogs could not recover. Two aces from Giulia Rodrigues and Lindsay Springer were not enough to reverse the momentum and the set was lost, 25-13.
Next Up - The UNC Asheville volleyball team, now 3-11 and 0-4 in the Big South conference, will look ahead to next Friday when they travel to Clinton, S.C. in a conference tilt against Presbyterian scheduled for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
