ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team started quickly but ultimately fell to Radford in four sets (18-25, 25-14, 25-15, 25-18) on Friday night at the Justice Center.
Stat Standouts – Lexy Cole led the Bulldogs in scoring on Friday with 9.5 points. Seven of Cole's 9.5 points came via a kill to go along with a solo block and three block assists. Lindsay Springer tallied her third double-double in the past four matches with 22 assists and 10 digs. Giulia Rodrigues paced the Bulldogs' backline with 18 digs.
First Set – The Bulldogs played one of their most complete sets of the season to begin Friday's match. Offensively, Asheville attacked the Highlander defense at a .300 clip with 10 kills. The Bulldogs also added a pair of aces and blocks to their scoring. Radford did not have any answers for Asheville in the first as the Bulldogs won the first frame, 25-18.
Second Set – Asheville kept that momentum rolling into the second set scoring the first four points. Unlike the first set, however, Radford answered with a 6-1 run to take the lead. Freshman Avery Loeback totaled four kills in the frame to pace the Bulldogs in the second. However, Radford kept it rolling from its early rally, attacking at a .343 clip in the frame. Thanks to this hot-hitting from the Highlanders, they were able to tie the match at a set apiece, 25-14.
Third Set – Radford's offense would cool off a bit in the third frame. The two teams would not gain a ton of separation in the early points. M.K. Roberts tallied an ace to make the score 12-10 Radford. Following that point, the Highlanders rattled off a 5-0 run to seize control. Asheville got the seven-point deficit down to five a couple of times but that would be as close as it would come as Radford took the third, 25-15.
Fourth Set – Like the first two sets of the night, Asheville started well in the fourth. The Bulldogs scored three of the first four points of the frame. Radford, however, once again put together a sizable run with this one being an 8-0 run to regain the momentum. Asheville closed the gap to as close as three points at 19-16 thanks to an ace from Pelin Aksoy. However, Radford had one more run in it as it closed out the match on a 6-2 run.
Next Up – Asheville, now 3-9 and 0-2 in Big South play, will be back in action next Friday and Saturday as it takes its first road trip in conference play. On their first Big South road swing, the Bulldogs will face USC Upstate on Friday at 6 p.m. before taking on Gardner-Webb on Saturday at 4 p.m.
