Men’s Tennis battles to the wire, falls just short to Gardner-Webb

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's tennis team fought tooth-and-nail on Wednesday afternoon, being edged out by Gardner-Webb by a score of 4-3.
The victory for Gardner-Webb locked up a top-four seed for the Runnin' Bulldogs, who are slated to host North Carolina A&T next weekend in the quarterfinal round of the Big South Championship. The loss, which drops Asheville to 9-7 and 3-4 in the Big South, moves the Bulldogs to the No. 5 seed, where they are set to face Presbyterian for a rematch in Clinton. Asheville will await a date from Presbyterian as seeds No. 3 and No. 4 can host April 14-16.
John Brann Reid and Leo Bierbaum made quick work of their opponents at the No. 1 doubles flight, but the Runnin' Bulldogs would take the second flight, and edge out the duo of Bruno and Rafa Serra in a tiebreak to earn the team point.
In singles action, Sirawit Daosaengsawang pulled Asheville even, topping Alex Lepine 6-3, 6-4. The Bulldogs would take a two-point lead over Gardner-Webb, as Harry Thursfield downed Victor Putter 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 2 spot and Quinn Fender was victorious 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 6 position.
From here, Gardner-Webb would rally, winning a two-set tiebreak at No. 4, a three-set battle at No. 3 and a three-set tiebreak at No. 1 to take the one-point victory.
The Bulldogs' regular season is not done yet, however, hosting Charlotte at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
