NINETY SIX, S.C. – UNC Asheville Women's Golf recorded its best three-day score in the Big South Tournament in program history, earning them a spot in this weekend's match play format.
Asheville's score of 908 beat its previous low in 2017 by 18 strokes and beat its best finish of tied for fifth in 2018.
After 54 holes, Asheville and High Point were tied for the fourth and final spot at 908 (+44), pushing the match to a sudden-death playoff, taking all five players from each team and counting the top four scores, starting on the ninth hole.
After scores were still tied after one playoff hole, both teams moved to the 10th where sophomore Phoebe Carles iced the match with a birdie putt to clinch the playoff.
Senior Baylee Evans also proved clutch in crunch time, grinding out an incredible up-and-down out of the bunker on the second playoff hole, followed by a dart of an approach shot from Carles on the second playoff hole.
Carles marked a season-best finish with a tie for eighth at 10-over-par with a final round 75, just behind Venecia Zaia, who concluded with a 73 and finished a program-best sixth at 8-over-par, and tied Madyson Gold's scoring record of 8-over-par in the Big South Tournament.
Gold followed closely behind with a tied for 14th 12-over-par with a final round 74, matching her finish from last year's Big South Tournament.
Sophomore Hailey Pendleton also recorded her best finish of the year at tied for 31st at 21-over-par, concluding with a 10-over-par 82.
Evans rounded out her stroke play with an 77, totaling for a 17-over-par finish as an individual.
The Bulldogs now head to match play where they will face off against the stroke play winners and No. 1 seeded Campbell Camels with tee times starting at 8:00 a.m.
Should the Bulldogs advance, they will play another 18 against the winner of USC Upstate and Charleston Southern.
