Track & Field readies for the Catamount Classic this weekend

04.14.2022 | Track and Field

ASHEVILLE, N.C.  – The UNC Asheville track & field teams will be back in action this weekend when they make the short trip over to Cullowhee, N.C., to compete at the Catamount Classic on the campus of Western Carolina. The two-day meet will run on Friday and Saturday, with the first events kicking off at 1 p.m. and noon on those respective days.

Last Time Out – Asheville was last in action at the VertKlasse Meeting on April 1-2. Over the course of the two-day meet, the Bulldogs broke three outdoor school records and set several season-best marks across a variety of events.

Prieto Named Big South Field Athlete of the Week – One of these record-breaking performances came in the long jump, where Claudia Prieto broke her own outdoor school record with a leap of 6.09-meters. Thanks to this and pacing Asheville in the triple jump and 60-meter dash, Prieto was named the Big South's Female Field Athlete of the Week on April 6. It marks the fourth time in her career that Prieto has earned a weekly honor from the Big South.

A couple of record-breaking performances – The two other record-breaking outings for the Bulldogs came via Jalen Anderson. Anderson ran the fastest times in both the 100-meter (10.53) and 200-meter dashes (21.07) in the program's outdoor history. Anderson's 100-meter dash time is tied for the ninth-fastest in the Big South this season, while his 200-meter dash mark ranks fifth in the conference.

A quick look ahead – Following this weekend's meet at WCU, the Bulldogs will make their second trip to Atlanta during this Outdoor season by competing at the Georgia Tech Invitational on April 22-23. This meet will be the final tune-up for the Bulldogs before the Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 9-11.

About this weekend's meet – Asheville will be joined in Cullowhee this weekend by East Tennessee State, Gardner-Webb, King, Mars Hill, Milligan, Point, Tusculum, Western Carolina, and Wofford. Live results will be available for following this weekend HERE.
