ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville men's basketball added depth to its backcourt, as head coach Mike Morrell announced the signing of transfer guard Caleb Burgess on Monday.
A native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Burgess has spent the last three seasons at Hofstra, where he started 40 of 77 games played in three seasons.
"We are excited to add Caleb to our squad," Morell said. "He brings valuable experience at the guard position having played many big-time minutes. His ability to facilitate the ball and pressure defensively will fit right in with our style here at UNC Asheville."
After getting adjusted his freshman season, Burgess established himself as a key player as a sophomore, averaging 8.3 points, 5.6 assists and 3.3 rebounds while starting all 23 games. Burgess' 5.6 assists not only led the Pride, but ranked 22nd in the nation and first in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). Scoring in double figures nine times, Burgess proved to be a defensive threat as well, ranking 10th in the CAA in steals and boasted an assist to turnover ratio of 2.0 (4th).
This past season, Burgess started 17 of 31 games for Hofstra including a seven-assist outing against UNC Wilmington which helped lift Hofstra to a two-point victory.
Prior to his time at Hofstra, Burgess played his high school ball at Moravian Prep in nearby Hickory, North Carolina, and was ranked in the top 30 players in the state in 2019.
