03.31.2022 | Track and Field

ASHEVILLE, N.C.  – The UNC Asheville track & field teams will be back in action this weekend as they compete at the VertKlasse Meeting on the campus of High Point University on Friday and Saturday. The first event will get underway at 10 a.m. on Friday, and action will resume at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Last Time Out – The Bulldogs took part in the Montreat Invitational last weekend. Overall, Asheville had several standout outings that included nine first-place finishes over the two-day meet. The women's squad finished atop the team point standings with 138, while the men's team finished third with 103 points.

Record Breaker – One outdoor school record was broken for Asheville last weekend at Montreat, which came in the men's shot put. Solomon McDonald, who was the previous record holder with a toss of 17.29-meters, topped the field with a mark of 17.61-meters. McDonald now owns Asheville's school records in the shot put during both the indoor and outdoor seasons.

Claudia continues stellar season - Another Bulldog that had a stellar weekend at Montreat was senior Claudia Prieto. Prieto logged a pair of podium finishes by placing first in the long jump (5.91-meters) and second in the triple jump (11.60-meters). Overall, Prieto owns the top mark for Asheville in three different individual events (100-meter dash, long jump, triple jump) in 2022 and is also a member of the 4x100-meter relay team that posted a season-best time of 48.22 for that event.

Fellow Big South schools: Campbell, Gardner-Webb, High Point, North Carolina A&T, and Winthrop will be competing at the meet as well. Furthermore, fellow North Carolina schools Appalachian State, Charlotte, Davidson, Duke, Elon, North Carolina, and Wake Forest will be in attendance as well.
