03.24.2022 | Track and Field
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams will return to action this weekend as they compete in the Montreat Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. Friday morning and will resume at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Last Time Out – Asheville opened its 2022 Outdoor Season last weekend with the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Georgia Tech. Overall, the Bulldogs had a stellar weekend against some stiff competition, logging multiple podium finishes and one outdoor school record over the two-day meet in Atlanta.
New Outdoor Record Holder – One of those bright spots for Asheville last weekend was sophomore Jalen Anderson. Anderson was the student-athlete that broke an outdoor school record last week (100-meter dash – 10.63). Anderson also paced Asheville in the 200-meter dash (21.90) and was a member of the 4x100-meter relay that clocked in at 41.68. That 4x100m time ranks as the second-fastest in program history during the outdoor season.
Among the Leaders in the Big South – With one outdoor meet under its belt, Asheville has a few student-athletes that rank at or near the top in their respective events among Big South student-athletes. Adam Hessler (1st – 5000m run – 14:41.36), Brock Newsome (2nd – 800m run – 1:53.12), Ashley Tysiac (2nd – 5000m run – 18:23.60), Claudia Prieto (2nd – Long Jump – 5.61m), Solomon McDonald (2nd – Shot Put – 17.05m), John Ciprich (3rd – 5000m run – 14:53.15), Madeline Nichols (3rd – 5000m run – 19:16.14), Zac Weas (3rd – 110m hurdles – 15.06), Men's 4x100m relay team (3rd – 48.22), Claudia Prieto (3rd – Triple Jump – 11.49m), Anthony Mason (4th – 400m dash – 48.63), Amanda Orban (4th – 800m run – 2:25.51), Solomon McDonald (4th – Discus – 46.55m), Maya Stanley (5th – Discus – 41.05m) all rank among the top five in the Big South in their given events entering this weekend's action.
Last Year at Montreat – The Bulldogs also competed in the Montreat Invitational last spring. Both the men's and women's teams finished second in their respective team standings after the two-day meet. Prieto broke the program's outdoor record in the triple jump (12.23-meters), and the Bulldogs won a trio of events on the second day to fuel the second-place finishes.
