HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The UNC Asheville Women's Golf team capped off play in its second tournament of the Spring on Sunday afternoon, finishing the Low Country Intercollegiate at the Moss Creek Golf Club.
After firing a round-one 318 and round two 314, the Bulldogs totaled 319 on day three to finish 11th in the strong field of 16 teams.
"It was great to get to play in the low country on a golf course that really tested the team's course management skills," said head coach Ericka Schneider. "We took some time during our spring break to really work on that with this tournament in mind. This isn't the last time we will be met with a golf course that you can't manhandle and have to think strategically through, whether it be from tee to fairway or approach shots into the green. Our conference championship course will give this team a good test of their course management skills with approach shots and short game. This was a great tournament to gauge where they stand with both of those categories and what we need to hone in on, in the coming weeks before the Big South Championship."
Venecia Zaia was the top finisher for UNC Asheville, finishing with a round-three 79 to end with a total of 233 for the tournament and tie for 27th individually.
Phoebe Carles finished five strokes behind Zaia for the weekend, birdieing hole No. 12 and jumping up eight spots in the standings to 41st place.
Madyson Gold, meanwhile, had the lowest individual round of the day for Asheville with a 5-over-par 77, featuring a birdie on hole No. 7 to finish T-46 while Hailey Pendleton rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs.
"The Low Country provided us with sunny weather and nice warm temperatures which was a welcome surprise to the intended forecast," Scheider said. "Going into play on Saturday we were prepared to spend the entire day coming off and on the golf course trying to get in 18 holes in, not 36, while dodging weather. Luckily the storm that was scheduled to come through pushed back to through the night and we were able to play without weather interference."

"We were so incredibly lucky to get to stay in private housing with some supporters of our program from our home course in Asheville that spend the winter months in Hilton Head Island," said Schneider. "Thank you to the Billings for hosting us during this tournament!!"
