Bulldogs close out their first outdoor meet of the season on Saturday

ATLANTA, Ga. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams wrapped up their first outdoor meet of the 2021-22 campaign on Saturday. On the final day of the Yellow Jacket Invitational, the Bulldogs logged multiple top-10 finishes and were not far off of several previous personal-best marks.
Asheville's top finish on Saturday came in the men's 4x100-meter relay event. The foursome of Akin Williams, Jalen Anderson, Denley Joseph, and Kamal Sharpe ranked fourth in the field with a time of 41.68. This time ranks second on Asheville's all-time outdoor list behind only the 41.16 time set by Williams, Anderson, Joseph, and Isaac Teasley last spring.
Anderson, who broke the school's outdoor record in the 100-meter dash on Friday, kept performing well for Asheville as he placed sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.90. Anderson, who also holds the school's outdoor record in that event, was just .50 seconds off his personal-best to open the outdoor season.
Anderson was not the only Bulldog to narrowly miss their personal-best on Saturday. Anthony Mason finished a spot outside the top 10 in the 400-meter dash. However, Mason's time of 48.63 was just 0.18 seconds off his best time, which also serves as the program's outdoor record.
The women's team was led by the tandem of Maya Stanley and Claudia Prieto. Stanley placed seventh in the discus with a toss of 41.05-meters. Prieto, meanwhile, continued her stellar weekend finishing eighth in the triple jump (11.49-meters). Both performances rank among the top five best for a Bulldog during their outdoor history and narrowly miss out on matching their previous personal-bests.
Asheville will hope to build upon this weekend's successes next weekend when it competes at the Montreat Invitational.
