ATLANTA, Ga. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams opened their outdoor season on Friday at the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Georgia Tech. Against a very competitive field, the Bulldogs broke one outdoor school record and logged a trio of podium finishes on the first day of action.
The outdoor school record broken on Friday came in the 100-meter dash. Sophomore Jalen Anderson, who logged the third-fastest outdoor time as a freshman last spring, set a new benchmark for the Bulldog in that event, clocking in at 10.63, topping the old record held by teammate Akin Williams (10.71 – 2019).
Asheville's trio of podium finishes all came from the men's team. Zac Weas finished as the runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.06. Solomon McDonald continued the momentum he built during the indoor season by placing second in the shot put on Friday with a toss of 17.05-meters. This mark was just 0.24-meters off his own school record he set last spring. Finally, Adam Hessler ran the fourth-fastest time in the program's outdoor history in the 5000-meter run (14:41.36) on his way to a second-place finish as well. Furthermore, two of the top four runners in the 5000-meter run were Bulldogs, with the other being John Ciprich (4th – 14:53.15).
Senior Claudia Prieto paced the Bulldogs in a pair of events on Friday. She placed seventh in the long jump with a leap of 5.61-meters and 11th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.27. Prieto's 100-meter time was just .06 seconds off her personal-best in the event during an outdoor season.
Some other Bulldogs with good showings on Friday were Ashley Tysiac and Jurnee Coleman. Tysiac finished fifth in the 5000-meter run with a time of 18:23.60. Coleman, meanwhile, put her name on the program's all-time outdoor list for the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.13. Coleman's time on Friday ranks as the third-fastest in the program's record book.
Asheville will be back in action for day two of the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Saturday. The first event is slated to begin at noon. Follow the action via the live results link HERE.
