Track & Field opens its Outdoor Season this weekend at Georgia Tech

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams will open their outdoor season this weekend with the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Georgia Tech. The two-day meet will get underway at 12:30 p.m. on Friday and Noon on Saturday.
Last Time Out – Asheville was last in action at the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships late last month. Both the men's and women's teams placed seventh at the Championships and had multiple student-athletes garner All-Big South honors.
Scholar-Athlete of the Year Shout Outs – Following the action at the conference's indoor meet, a pair of Bulldogs were recognized for their work in the classroom. Both Jack Choiniere and Claudia Prieto earned the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards. Choiniere and Prieto are the first Bulldogs to earn this honor since 2018, when Kayli Nichols did so following the outdoor season.
All-Big South honorees – In addition to the academic awards earned by the Bulldogs, they also had several student-athletes earn All-Big South honors. Prieto (2nd – Long Jump), Solomon McDonald (2nd – shot put), men's distance medley relay team (2nd – 10:07.77), men's 4x400m relay team (3rd – 3:17.95) all landed podium finishes at the Championships.
Note from Coach – "The Yellow Jacket Invitational gives us a view on how our last three weeks have prepared us for the season though we are still in a heavy training period," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "The start of the season provides the first opportunities to compete in an outdoor-only event. The women's javelin throw is contested on Friday, and both women's and men's discus throws on Saturday. I know our team is excited to begin this season as most student-athletes tend to favor the outdoor season over the indoor season. Two bonuses to competing at Georgia Tech is their meets are very well run, and additionally, there will be outstanding competition present."
