JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams continued their stellar indoor seasons on the final day of the Buccaneer Invitational on Saturday. Overall, the Bulldogs won three events, shattered three indoor school records, and logged nine podium finishes on the day. Furthermore, the Bulldogs set new season-best marks in 15 different events in the last two days in Johnson City.
"Each meet we perform better as a team so another positive step was taken towards the back half of the season," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "Claudia Prieto and Solomon McDonald were named the field event athletes of the meet. School records for Solomon and Raina Jackson in the shot put, Adam Hessler in the mile. Men's 4x400m won as well as Claudia in the long and triple jumps, and Solomon im the shot put. A number of our athletes were on the podium with second and third place finishes."
Two of the three indoor school records broken Saturday came in the shot put. The duo of Solomon McDonald and Raina Jackson bettered records that they broke earlier this season at the Appalachian State Invitational. On Saturday, McDonald paced the field in the shot put with a mark of 18.28-meters, bettering his previous record of 18.06-meters. Jackson, meanwhile, ranked third among competitors but established a new indoor program benchmark checking in at 13.01-meters.
The third and final indoor record broken Saturday came in the men's one-mile run. Sophomore Adam Hessler finished fifth with a time of 4:13.37 but broke Asheville's top indoor mark established back in 1996 by James Rogers (4:16.84).
Senior Claudia Prieto picked up one of Asheville's three first-place nods Saturday by posting the top leap in the triple jump (12.09-meters). Prieto, who won the long jump on Friday (5.88-meters), has now won two individual events in back-to-back meets for Asheville.
Some other stellar individual outings Saturday for Asheville came in the finals of events that had prelims occur on Friday. Jurnee Coleman cut .07 off her prelim time to place second in the 60-meter hurdles (9.19). Nick Roberts also tallied a podium finish in the men's 60-meter hurdle finals, clocking in at 8.43, which was just .06 off Zac Weas' time of 8.36 for the lowest time posted by a Bulldog in 2021-22.
Finally, Anthony Mason finished as the runner-up in the 200-meter dash finals with a time of 21.90. Mason not only improved his time by .12 seconds from the prelims, but his time on Saturday ranks as the second-fastest on Asheville's all-time indoor list.
The Bulldogs also set new season-best times in both 4x400-meter relay races. In the men's race, the quartet of Mason, Isaac Teasley, Denley Joseph, and Bryson Riddick posted the fastest time on the day (3:16.05). This time nearly matched the indoor school record of 3:15.42 set back in 2020. The women's 4x400m team also cut significant time as Coleman, Raven Thurman, Khadeesha Crumbly, and Amanda Orban clocked in at 4:05.76 sped past the previous best time from this indoor campaign, 4:11.37.
Asheville will be back in action next Friday and Saturday at the Marshall Invitational. That meet will mark the final competition for the Bulldogs before the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships on February 24-25.
