Bulldog Track & Field wraps up day one of Buccaneer Invitational

02.04.2022 | Track and Field

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams wrapped up their first day of competition of the Buccaneer Invitational on Friday. Asheville tallied eight top-five finishes, qualified four athletes for Saturday's finals, and won one event.

The lone event win for the Bulldogs came in the women's long jump as Claudia Prieto paced the field with a leap of 5.88-meters. This continues a stellar streak of success for Prieto in the long jump as she has placed first, second, or third in the event in the last four meets.

Anthony Mason also had a stellar day in Johnson City. He paced all runners in the qualifying round of the men's 400-meter run with a time of 49.56 and finished third in 200-meter dash qualifying with a time of 22.02.

Isaac Teasley, who won his heat in the 200-meter dash, also qualified for the finals of the 400-meter dash. Kamal Sharpe also won a heat in the 200m run, and fellow Bulldog Bryson Riddick also qualified for the 200-meter finals.

The tandem of Jack Choiniere (16.48m) and Solomon McDonald (16.46m) continued their stellar indoor seasons by placing third and fourth in the weight throw. Both Choiniere's and McDonald's tosses Friday upped their personal-best marks in the event. Only Kurt Hibert's throw of 17.59-meters from 2013 ranks higher than Choiniere's or McDonald's throws from Friday.

Asheville had a couple of other qualifiers in the 60-meter hurdles events. Nick Roberts did so in the men's with a time of 8.47, while Jurnee Coleman did the same, clocking in at 9.26.

Rounding out Friday's highlights for Asheville came in the women's weight throw as Noela Moraga set a new personal-best mark in the event with a throw of 14.57-meters. Friday's throw was not only a personal-best for Moraga but also ranks third on the program's all-time list.

The Bulldogs will be back in action for day two at the Buccaneer Invitational on Saturday. The action is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m. and will run throughout the day. Results can be followed via the live results link HERE.
