02.18.2022 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will return to Kimmel Arena on Saturday when it hosts USC Upstate in a Big South matchup. Saturday's game, which will be the program's Senior Day, is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m. on ESPN+.

Timeline - The day will open up with women's basketball against USC Upstate at 2:00 p.m., as we celebrate Nadiria Evans on her senior day. Tip-off between UNC Asheville men's basketball and Winthrop will be approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's contest.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Day - Saturday's game(s) will be UNC Asheville Athletics' Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) day. As part of the celebration, student-athletes and staff will be wearing shirts with the hashtag #together to signify that the Bulldogs are all one supportive unit. Additionally, staff will be wearing special DEI pins to promote the special day.

$5 February, Blue Out & Salute to Service Saturday - A reminder, tickets for all basketball games this month are just $5 as a part of UNC Asheville's "$5 February" promotion. To purchase tickets ahead of time, click here. Fans, faculty, and staff are all invited and encouraged to wear blue as we make Saturday a "Blue Out"! Additionally, any active or retired member of the military will receive free admission with a valid military ID.

Last Time Out – Asheville dropped a 79-62 decision on the road at Radford last Tuesday. The Bulldogs moved to 7-19 overall and 2-13 in Big South action with the loss.

Salute to the Senior – As mentioned earlier, Saturday will be Senior Day for Asheville's lone senior this season, Nadiria Evans. In her five seasons as a Bulldog, Evans has racked up several accolades and broken multiple records along the way. A two-time Preseason All-Big South selection, she recently broke the program's scoring record during the Division I era. Now having scored 1,729 points, she ranks among the top 15 scorers in the history of the Big South Conference. Evans will leave Asheville as the Big South's all-time leader in games played (143) while owning the program's record in free throws made (471) and free throws attempted (695).

Postseason Positioning on the line – The conclusion of the regular season is rapidly approaching for the Bulldogs and Spartans. Both teams are looking to improve/solidify their upcoming Big South Women's Basketball Tournament. The Tournament will take place at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, N.C., on March 1-6. Get your tickets today by clicking HERE.

Scouting USC Upstate – After being picked to finish tenth in the preseason poll, USC Upstate has arguably been the most surprising team in the Big South in 2021-22. The Spartans bring a 20-6 overall record to Asheville on Saturday to go with a 12-3 mark in league games. A strength for Upstate has been its ability to get production from several different players. Seven different Spartans have scored more than 100 points this season, with five of those seven topping the 200-point mark. Leading this group is Chelia Watson, averaging 14.8 points per game has netted 384 points this season.

Series Rewind vs. USC Upstate – The all-time series between the Bulldogs and Spartans is nearly even. Asheville has won nine of the 17 meetings, but Upstate has won the last three matchups between these two programs, including a 66-53 win on January 1 in Spartanburg.
