Radford uses a strong fourth quarter to upend the Bulldogs
02.15.2022 | Women's Basketball
RADFORD, Va. – Radford used a combination of a strong fourth quarter and 11 3-pointers made to pick up a 79-62 win over the UNC Asheville women's basketball team Tuesday evening in Big South action.
Nadiria Evans led the way for the Bulldogs after a one-game absence with 16 points to go with four assists and three steals. Kai Carter added 11 points, while Amanda Blake nearly tallied a double-double scoring 10 points and grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman Mallory Bruce also provided Asheville a nice boost off the bench, netting nine points that included a pair of made 3-pointers.
There was no shortage of offense between Radford and Asheville in the first two quarters as the two teams combined for nearly 80 points of offense. The Bulldogs got stellar contributions early from Blake and Evans as both players finished the first half in double figures. Radford, meanwhile, got a significant boost from beyond the arc as it knocked down five of its eight attempts in the opening two quarters. With this added perk of 3-point shooting, the Highlanders led the Bulldogs at the half, 41-36.
The second half began just as competitive as the first. Asheville kept pace with the Highlanders keeping it a two-possession game for most of the third quarter. Bruce knocked down a pair of crucial 3-pointers in the frame, with one of those trimming Radford's lead down to three, 58-55, with 1:57 to go. An Evans layup was sandwiched around a pair of Radford makes, which meant the Bulldogs trailed by six, 63-57, heading to the fourth.
The tide seemed to turn in the fourth quarter. Asheville started the final frame having trouble finding the bottom of the net. Along with the cold shooting, the Bulldogs were hurt by 10 turnovers that translated to 13 points for Radford. With these factors working together, Radford built its lead to as many as 22 points with 3:54 to go in regulation. That proved too large for Asheville to come back from as the Highlanders went on to win, 79-62.
Next up for Asheville is a home matchup against USC Upstate on Saturday afternoon at Kimmel Arena. The game, which will be the team's senior day, is set for a 2 p.m. tip-off on ESPN+.
