Track & Field posts strong showing at first indoor meet of 2022-23

BOONE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams posted several strong performances in their first meet of the 2022-23 season over the past two days at the John Weaver Invitational in Boone, N.C.
Overall, Asheville broke three indoor school records and matched another over the course of the two-day meet. The Bulldogs also won eight events and logged several more podium finishes on the weekend.
Two of the three indoor school records broken in Boone came from the women's team. Claudia Prieto bested her own indoor record in triple jump with a mark of 12.45-meters. Raina Jackson broke the indoor shot put record as well with a toss of 14.59-meters, which also led all competitors on Saturday.
Anthony Mason also broke an Asheville indoor record on the men's side in the 300-meter dash with a time of 34.85. Fellow Bulldog Solomon McDonald matched his own school record in the shot put with a mark of 18.28-meters.
Mason also teamed up with fellow Asheville runners Jalen Anderson, Isaac Teasley, and Bryson Riddick to win the 4x300-meter relay with a time of 2:22.93. Anderson (6.55) and Mason (6.56) both ran in the 55-meter dash as well and their times ranked among the top-five times in program history. Anderson did the same in the 300-meter dash as well with a time of 35.35 (4th all-time).
Other event winners for Asheville all occurred on Saturday. Zac Weas led the field in the 55-meter hurdles with times of 7.52 in qualifying and 7.47 in the finals. Distance runners Brock Newsome (Mile – 4:23.87), Alex Haines (800-meter – 1:58.94), and Quinn Jacquez (3000-meter run – 8:59.66) all earned the top spot in their events as well.
Some other highlights for Asheville included the Bulldogs finishing first-second-third in the mile and 800-meter runs. Kenneth Wilkes (triple jump – 14.70-meters) and Nick Roberts (55-meter hurdles – 7.66) both logged stellar marks in their events too.
The next scheduled meet for Asheville is on January 27-28 at the VMI Winter Classic.
