Track and Field kicks off 2023 at Gamecock Opener

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville track and field teams will open the new year with the Gamecock Opener this Saturday at the Carolina Indoor track and field complex in Columbia, S.C. The competition on Saturday will take place between 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.Â

Last time out: To open the indoor season, Asheville competed in the John Weaver Invitational in Boone, N.C. on December 2-3. In the two day competition, the Bulldogs had an excellent showing, placing first on the men's side and with the women coming in fifth place. The teams had an historic two-day run for the program, with four UNC Asheville records being broken or tied and three new Big South top-ten records being added by the Bulldogs. Overall, Asheville nabbed 19 podium finishes and nine first place finishes throughout the competition.

Record Breaking Start: No stranger to shattering the record books, Claudia Prieto broke her own indoor program record in the triple jump with a distance of 12.45-meters, placing second in the event. Prieto also placed second in the long jump with a distance of 5.92-meters. Raina Jackson broke the program record for Women's shot put with a distance of 14.59-meters and entered the Big South top-ten all-time leader boards with her first place victory in the event. In the men's 300-meter dash, Anthony Mason placed first in the event, while capturing an Asheville program record of his own with a time of 34.85 seconds. Asheville had numerous other first place performers with Zac Weas in the 55-meter hurdles (7.47), Brock Newsome in the one mile run (4.23.87), Alex Haines in the 800-meter run (1.58.94), Quinn Jacquez in the 3000-meter run (8:59.66), and the team of Mason, Bryson Riddick, Isaac Teasley, and Jalen Anderson in the 4x300 relay (2:22.93).
McDonald named Big South Field Athlete of the Week: Along with his teammates' great performance, Solomon McDonald's performance earned him the Co-Big South Field Athlete of the Week. McDonald tied his own UNC Asheville indoor school record in the shot put with a mark of 18.28-meters. The record, which McDonald broke last season, ranks fourth on the Conference's all-time indoor list in the shot put. McDonald also placed fifth in the men's weight throw with a distance of 15.33-meters.
Teams Competing: The Bulldogs will be joined in Columbia by fellow Big South school USC Upstate along with Anderson, Claflin, Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, Converse, Covenant, Emmanuel, Erskine, Limestone, Mars Hill, Savannah State, South Carolina, Southern Wesleyan, and West Georgia.
