Balanced Bulldogs down UT Martin, 90-83

12.03.2022 | Men's Basketball

HIGHLIGHTS

ASHEVILLE, N.C. –
Six players scored in double figures to help lead the UNC Asheville men's basketball team to a 90-83 victory over UT Martin on Saturday afternoon at Kimmel Arena. With Saturday's win, the Bulldogs are now 5-3 on the season.

Drew Pember stuffed the stat sheet on Saturday scoring 18 points, grabbed 11 rebounds to go with five blocks, four assists, and two steals. Pember, who notched his second double-double of the season in the win, also went a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line against the Skyhawks.

Tajion Jones and Fletcher Abee both netted 17 points and knocked down a trio of 3-pointers each. Nick McMullen went 6-for-12 from the field on his way to a 13-point afternoon, while the tandem of Trent Stephney and Jamon Battle each chipped in 11 points.

Saturday's contest started very competitively between the Bulldogs and Skyhawks. No lead grew to more than four points for most of the first half. The first real swing in momentum seemed to occur with a little over three minutes to go before halftime. Asheville reeled off a 13-4 run to close the half and in doing so built the game's largest lead to that point, 46-38.

Overall, the Bulldog shot 60.7 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, which marked their highest shooting percentage in a half since they shot 67.7 percent in a half vs. Brevard earlier this season.

Facing its largest deficit to that point, UT Martin battled back and chipped away at the Bulldog lead. The Skyhawks eventually came back to tie the score at 61-61 with 10:55 to go in regulation.

Even with UT Martin battling back to tie the score, the Bulldogs stayed the course. Asheville knocked down some big 3-pointers and free throws down the stretch to go with improved work on the boards to extend its lead out to as many as 14 points with 1:30 to go. UT Martin cut into the lead a bit, but the Bulldogs held on for the 90-83 win.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday when they welcome Warren Wilson to Kimmel Arena. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Owls is set for 4:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
