12.10.2022 | Men's Basketball
DAYTON, Ohio – The UNC Asheville men's basketball team fell on the road at Dayton on Saturday by a score of 79-56.
Drew Pember led the way for the Bulldogs on Saturday totaling 16 points on 5-for-12 shooting from the field to go along with a team-high eight rebounds. Jamon Battle was the only other Bulldog to score in double figures on Saturday as he netted 10 points.
The Flyers were able to get out to an early lead on the Bulldogs thanks to their ability to rebound and score inside. Dayton out-rebounded Asheville 28-11 in the first 20 minutes, while it scored 24 of its 34 points in the half in the paint. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, struggled to put sustained offense together. Battle scored six, while Tajion Jones and Pember both chipped in five points a piece but the Bulldogs found themselves down by 15 points at the halftime break, 34-19.
Asheville made some adjustments and was able to surpass its point total from the first half about midway through the second. At one point the Bulldogs had a stretch where they connected on six of eight field goals. Pember netted 11 of his 16 points on the day in the second half, while Nick McMullen (nine points), Dean Gabrelcik (seven points), and Trent Stephney (six points) sparked Asheville to nearly double its point total from the first to second half (19 to 37).
However, the Flyers also improved their offensive production in the second half. Dayton would grow its lead to as many as 29 points with a little under two minutes to go. Asheville closed the game on a 6-0 run to make Saturday's final score, 79-56.
Asheville, now 6-4 on the season, will be back in action on Tuesday when it visits South Carolina State for another non-conference matchup. Tip-off for that contest is set for 7 p.m.
